Owsley "Bear" Stanley was a key figure in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960s, and played a significant role in the counterculture of the 1960s. After a pivotal acid trip in 1964, Stanley began making his own LSD and met the Grateful Dead at one of Ken Kesey’s acid tests the following year. From that point on, Stanley’s influence on the band was profound: He funded their first sound system, conceived the idea for the band’s iconic lightning-bolt-and-skull logo, recorded many of their early shows and designed their short-lived Wall of Sound PA system in 1974.

This batik piece was created after a personal conversation I had with Bill Kreutzmann backstage at the Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado after a 7 Walkers show. In this conversation he told me of a dream he had after Owsley's passing in which a bear came to him offering guidance. He knew that this bear must have been Owsley. To pay homage to this amazing man I have recreated the original 7 Walkers design to directly reflect the influential power of Owsley "The Bear" Stanley.
